How much of the art process should I show?
The first answer is to show all the time, effort and repetition that goes on behind the scenes. That, as much as these videos make things look smooth, most of the sweat is invisible. And so I want to show everyone, for example, that each and every single wooden edge in a piece is meticulously sanded. Not just once when it comes off the CNC but then again after the priming coat.
However the other compulsion is to keep it private. Why?
Well, when I'm practicing and making something, I make mistakes. And mistakes are how I learn and get better. But I won't make those mistakes in the first place if I'm worried about others seeing them. It's important to have the space to be...bad? Like, just plain stupid. Fearlessly terrible.
Ultimately, the answer lies somewhere between those two extremes and that's how this piece came to be. You look at it from the front, see a perfect circle and see where it came from. But investigate the back and you see all these weird, crooked attempts that slowly take shape and become more refined.
A small monument to those who know what it is to persevere.
